Most air compressors have at least two pressure gauges — and many operators glance at them daily without being entirely sure what they mean. Understanding your gauges is one of the simplest ways to catch problems early.
Shows the pressure inside the receiver tank — your compressor’s “fuel tank.”
Normal: Pressure rises steadily when the compressor runs and holds steady (or drops slowly) when it stops. For most commercial systems, the compressor cuts in around 100–110 PSI and cuts out at 125–135 PSI.
Pressure falling while the compressor runs → can’t keep up with demand
Rapid cycling between cut-in and cut-out → short-cycling problem
Shows the pressure being delivered to your tools, downstream of the regulator.
Normal: Stable at your regulator’s set point regardless of what’s happening in the tank — as long as tank pressure is above the set point. Typically 90–100 PSI for most pneumatic tools.
Line pressure drops significantly during tool use → inadequate supply or distribution restriction
Regulator can’t hold set pressure → regulator needs service
Not technically a gauge, but just as important. Oil should be visible in the middle of the sight glass — not at the bottom (too low) and not at the very top (overfilled).
Low oil is one of the most common causes of compressor failure. Check it every day.

My compressor’s tank pressure keeps dropping when the compressor is off. Is that normal?
A slow, gradual drop over many hours is normal (minor system leaks). A rapid drop within minutes of shutdown usually indicates a leaking check valve — pressurized air is bleeding back through the compressor head. This is a common and relatively inexpensive repair.
What does it mean if my line pressure gauge fluctuates while I’m using a tool?
Some fluctuation is normal during heavy use, especially with piston compressors cycling on and off. Significant or sudden drops usually indicate either inadequate compressor capacity for the demand, a distribution restriction (undersized pipe or hose), or a failing regulator.
My pressure switch never shuts the compressor off. What’s happening?
If the compressor runs continuously without reaching cut-out pressure, either demand exceeds capacity (compressor is undersized for current use) or the compressor has a performance problem — worn valves, rings, or a leak large enough to prevent pressure build-up. Both warrant a service call.
